Seeking Wisdom...

This Year's Theme: Seek Wisdom

I've been really taking my time getting down my goals/focus for this year: partly because January has been ALL OVER the place, and we'll just be getting into a routine again on Monday, and partly because I really wanted to take time and think it through.

In December I was really really frustrated with some decisions we were faced with. Often it feels like you're choosing between lots of "good" options, and it's maddening! As I prayed over the decision-making process, the word "wisdom" kept coming to mind. Through scripture and prayer, God reminded me that while there are many "good" options, there is only one "best" option: and that can only be discerned with His wisdom. Since I was learning this over the New Year and it has continue to be a theme all this month (we are currently facing some HUGE decisions that are really difficult), I've decided to focus this year on the Pursuit of Wisdom.

______________________________________________________

Theme Verses - Proverbs 1:2-3, 5, 7

"For attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."

_____________________________________________________

Yearly Focuses
1. Attain Wisdom
a. Listen - WAIT before saying anything
b. Prudence - WAIT before buying anything
c. Discipline - WAIT before eating anything

**These are areas that I will always struggle with (until the Lord changes that part of me!), so I'm committing to just wait before I do them. Hopefully waiting will allow the Lord to challenge and encourage my mind to do what is most wise.

2. Seek Wisdom through being Disciplined
a. Quiet Time
b. Workout
c. Instrument Practice (either guitar or violin)

**These are daily disciplines that I would like to build and keep in my life. I have a hard time with the day-to-day maintaining life things, and am feeling a push to focus on the patience and fortitude that comes with living each day well (instead of pushing towards a big event, then the next big event, etc.) THE GOAL: do each of these 5/7 days every week. I'll be reporting every Saturday on my progress...I have to remind myself that I'm just looking for improvement, not perfection!

3. Personal Goals
a. Read 30 books (seems to be a theme on a lot of the blogs I've been reading, I thought I'd jump on the band wagon. I'm on # 4 & 5 right now!)
b. Run a marathon
c. Set up "life systems" - money, pictures, video editing, communications, birthday cards, recycling, paperwork, addresses, journaling, etc.

Pure Cuteness...

We babysat Christine and Jason's son Josiah last weekend...and basically spent the whole time doing this. Can we say cute?!

Random Thoughts...

Here are my random thoughts for the day. :)

1. I'm all traveled out. Today was a big day, and by the end of it Chris and I both were beat and ready to be in a HOME again, with our own room and lesson than 5 million people around us. :) (it's been REALLY great to stay with both our families and Jason and Christine...5 weeks is just a really long time to be in travel mode!).

2. Second, I bought 6 pairs of knitting needles and 10 balls of yarn yesterday. It is ON! I've watched youtube videos to review the casting-on process and learn the purl stitch, and here's my first "fun" scarf pattern. Yay!

3. I've been meaning to write this shout-out for a long time: these are the two FUNNIEST youtube videos I've ever seen (thanks brother!). If you take the time to watch it, I promise you won't regret it. :)

Original

Auto-Tune Version :)

4. I just finished the book "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah, about child soldiers in Sierra Leone...WOW.

5. I just started reading "Dream Giver" by Bruce Wilkinson. Again, WOW!

6. Ever been to a Pacific Coffee Company? We're basically on a first-name basis with the Hong Kong branch workers. :)

More pictures, more fun times...

The last week has flown by, and we're still having a WONDERFUL time with the Paine's in Hong Kong. I've officially picked up knitting since we've been here, Chris is enjoying the fast internet speeds, and we've gotten a good mix of sight-seeing and relaxing. AHH...the perfect vacation. :) Here are some more of our highlights...

The Peak View
We went up to "The Peak" to see the real Hong Kong view!

All the Chinese people do the peace sign when they take their pictures...When in Rome, I guess?!

The Heritage Museum
In all, we didn't love this museum. :( It would have probably been great if we knew something about the culture, but as it was, we just looked at pictures of a bunch of people and history we knew nothing about. Oh well...we got some fun pictures out of it!

Lamma Island
There are a TON of surrounding islands around Hong Kong, and one of them is Lamma Island. It's kind of a hippie island, so that was fun!

We enjoyed our share of ice cream while we explored. :)

There was a BEAUTIFUL beach where we spent most our time...it was quite relaxing!

The harbor was filled with rustic boats that made it so picturesque.

A fishing boat that pulled up while we were waiting for the ferry to take us back.

Ocean Park
We realized that we hadn't ever been to a theme park with just the two of us, and it was ABOUT TIME that we did. Chris moved further away from his fear of heights by riding on a Ferris Wheel AND another cable car! Very impressive... :)

Surprisingly, our favorite part of the park was the animal exhibits! This was the "Sea Jelly Spectacular". It was REALLY COOL!

They had a big tank filled with HUGE fish, sharks, and sting rays. Chris was like a 4th grader...he didn't want to leave.

We went to an ice skating performance that was really cool. It was actually like an ice skating show, magic show, and the Blue Man Group all put together. Pretty fun...

I think this was both of our first times seeing a live Panda Bear...it seems like that can't be possible, but neither of us could remember ever seeing a Panda! Have I seen a panda with any of you out there?

It was a beautiful day with beautiful views.

The 2nd cable car experience...

In all, we're loving our time here. :) Pretty soon we're back to India and work...we're starting to miss everyone and being in a "home" environment, and it definitely feels good to be excited to go back! Later... :)

in Hong Kong!

We've been having a GREAT time in Hong Kong, and have just been go-go-going...unless we haven't been. :) We sat in a coffee shop for 8 hours the other day, and have enjoyed sleeping in until the ripe old hour of 7:30 (which feels like sleeping in with the jetlag). In case you want to know, we've been...

Visiting Noah's Ark...

Watching the lion's dance...

Contemplating whether we're clever or a doofus...

Seeing the Peking opera (we actually just saw the ladies, we'll see an opera this weekend!)...

Visiting the world's largest outdoor bronze Buddha...

Posing with mean-looking warriors...

Riding a tram (much to Chris' chagrin!)...

Hiking with the cutest family EVER...

Trying on some of the local wear...

Perfecting our chopstick skills on the Dim Sum...

In all, it's been great so far....and we still have lots to do!

Christmas Family Fun!

So much happened over Christmas Break, that I think I’ll just bullet-point my favorite memories. Here’s our trip home in a nutshell! (these posts have been really text heavy lately, sorry!)

- We got to spend 5 whole days with the entire Farley Family! That hasn’t happened since I’ve known Chris, and it was a really beautiful time. Mike and Lianne are expecting their first baby, so it was especially fun to celebrate that fun life change. It was also really fun to look forward to when we’ll all be close again. In just a few months Mike and Lianne will move back from Kentucky and we’ll move back from India. YAY!
- The boys got remote-controlled helicopters, and quickly reverted to their childhood selves. They didn’t have an adult moment for a good 6 hours!
- I got to go to school with Rachel and see where she works! It was so great to see her job and meet the boys she talks about all the time.
- We had a baby shower for Mike and Lianne! It was really great to see all Chris’ family and connect with them again…a lot had happened in just six months!
- We got to see our puppies! Lexi actually forgot who we were at first and growled at us for about 5 minutes. Then Chris yelled at her and she recognized us. All is well in puppyville.
- We got to spend 6 whole days with the entire Stellmaker Family! That also hasn’t happened since Matthew went to college. AND, we were in the new house! They’ve finished the basement and are living in it while they finish the rest of the house...mom and dad were in one room, papa was in another room, and Chris, Amy, Matthew and myself were in the last room. Lots of quality conversations happen when you have a slumber party every night!
- I got to visit my Webster City students! The new director let me visit choir (thank you!), and it was so great to see them. It was VERY emotional…it sometimes feels like I left my own kids. In all though, it was really great and I was SO glad to reconnect.
- My lovely sister-in-law organized a color/haircut for my Christmas present! It was SUCH a gift, and I’m still loving it. Thanks Rachie!
- We went up to Minnesota to visit both sides of my family. This was the first Christmas without my grandma, and also the first time I’d been to their house since she passed away (she died while we were in India). I loved my grandma VERY much, so this was a really emotional time. I got to take her favorite sweatshirt with me, and have already cuddled up to it multiple times. We also found some of her journals (SO interesting and insightful!), her crochet needles (I’ll now be picking up crochet), and a nameplate. Shirley = Restful Spirit. So true of her, it was really neat to find it.
- We also visited my mom’s side! Unfortunately, my aunt and papa were really sick, so it almost got cancelled! Uncle Doug came to the rescue though, and hosted it at his house. My cousin Erik’s family, the Stellmaker family, and my Uncle Doug and Aunt Sue got together, and had a WONDERFUL time. We called everyone that couldn’t be there, convinced Olivia that not all dogs are evil, and played lots of piano. We love family!
- I had a 8-hour date with Katie, and loved every second of it! I really love sister-friends. 
- It was really fun to bring India presents to everyone!
- I got to go ice-skating with three of my students from last year, and we had a great time. I miss you guys!
- We took family pictures! One of my graduated students (and now one of Amy’s college friends) likes photography and has a nice camera, so she took them and they turned out GREAT! I’ll post them later (thanks Sam!)
- I had a great time reconnecting with my friend Lana. We’ve been friends since high school, but neither of us are particularly skilled at maintaining relationships. When both sides of the friendship are “in the moment people”, it’s hard to stay in touch when you’re not together! We both have so much grace with each other though, and just love when we’re together. I love you Lana!
- We had a REALLY fun New Year’s Eve party at my parent’s house…just us and some of their friends, but we laughed so hard! We played Telephone Pictionary. My favorite sentence was “The family marched to war in the name of recycling.” I post some video of us laughing later.
- We had a fun get-together with at Brian and Rachel’s house…Becca, Jason, Liz, Derek, Tom, Sarah Selby, Rachel, Brian, Matt, Amy, and us. Great talks, some animated games of Bananagrams and Nertz, and Casey’s Pizza. Really, what more can you ask for?
- We went to church with Rachel and Brian, and had a great time reconnecting with some college friends we hadn’t seen in a while. We also had a really sweet time of worship, and both Chris and I felt really touched by the Lord. After church we went out to a Mexican restaurant…and had about 30 people! I didn’t know half of them, so it was especially fun to meet our friend’s friends. YAY!

There really were so many wonderful moments, and I know I’m forgetting to mention a lot of special times. Thank you to our family for making it possible for us to come back, for feeding us, housing us, lending us a car, paying for things…we really love you guys, and can’t wait to see you again in July!

This one says it all...

Travel Crisis Countdown!

It's 5 AM and Chris and I are both wide awake. I've already organized all our luggage and started a load of laundry. I'm actually kind of enjoying the jetlag! I guess that's what happens when you travel for 63 hours. :)

Our 63 hour trip was interesting, to say the least. Usually, the word "interesting" suggests frustration, exhaustion, grouchiness…but we were somehow able to stay positive! In the words of Monk, "Here's what happened."

Crisis #1 – We woke up Monday morning to a wonderful breakfast cooked by my mommy, then started getting packed up. An hour before we were supposed to leave, my sister got a text saying I had left my glasses in Indianola…and I wear my glasses all the time, so this was bad news. My WONDERFUL brother-in-law Matt was willing (after he woke up a bit!) to meet my sister half way, so instead of leaving the country for 6 months without my glasses, we left home an hour late with the glasses. Crisis #1 averted!

Supporting Information - Mom, Amy, Matthew, Chris and I got up to Minneapolis after enjoying a last American Arby’s meal. We exchanged tearful goodbyes, entered the airport with Matthew, and used his cell phone to call Jet Airways (we flew to Delhi on American Airlines, but had to connect to Jet Airways to get to Hong Kong). Our connection was really short, so we wanted to know what the penalty for rebooking would be. They said it would be rp. 4000 each…not horrible (about $80 each), but definitely more than we wanted to pay. We said good-bye to Matthew (maybe for a whole year!), and headed off to find our gate.

Crisis #2 – As we’re waiting for our flight to Chicago, the desk attendant gets on the intercom to let us know that the plane is having brake problems, and will be leaving 5 minutes late….then 10 minutes late…then 20 minutes…and now it’s cancelled. WHAT?! There was a mad rush to rebook, and Chris found himself at the end of a very long and agitated line. He channeled his inner “Amazing Racer” and found a separate desk attendant to help him. Note: he was the ONLY one she helped! People lined up after him, and she told them to go back to the original line because she couldn’t help them there. Impressive, no? Not 10 minutes later that whole flight was booked and people were being put up in hotels and booked on flights 24 hours later. Crisis #2 averted!

Crisis #3 – Because we got onto a later flight, we had only 20 minutes to make our connection to Delhi. We talked with the stewardess about the situation and got bumped to Business Class for the last 20 minutes...got to experience how the other side lives! We ran the whole way, realized how out of shape we are, and were nearly the last to board. Crisis #3 averted!

Supporting Information – When we made our flight reservation to Hong Kong there was only an hour between our landing in Delhi and our take off for Hong Kong, so we knew there was a possibility that we’d miss it. At the time it seemed like an acceptable risk…as adrenaline was rushing through our bodies in anticipation, it seemed like the STUPIDEST idea ever! The plane to Delhi actually left 45 minutes late due to air traffic issues. There was also a medical situation on board that had to be taken care of before anyone could leave the plane, so we were VERY late getting into Delhi. Oh jeez….

Crisis #4 – The plane got into Delhi at 10:10 PM, and our next flight left at 10:45 PM. Since we were switching airlines we couldn’t have our baggage routed straight through, so we had to go through customs, collect our baggage, then check in again. AHH! We told the stewardesses our situation and they actually let us slip out between medical personnel so we could try to make our flight. We were REALLY optimistic…ran the whole way, got through customs in less than a minute, got directions from baggage to check-in…and then waited. And waited…and waited…and waited. The baggage took 30 minutes and we missed the flight. Bummer. Crisis #4 NOT averted.

Crisis #5 – As we looked for Jet Airways to rebook, we mentally resigned to the fact that we’d just have to pay extra and fly out the next day. But when we asked to change the tickets, they informed us that they only had Business and First Class tickets available…and the CHEAPEST we could get another ticket for was $400 a person! NOT going to happen…we saved quite diligently to be able to go on this trip in the first place, and definitely didn’t have $800 lying around to pay for a ticket we’d ALREADY PAID FOR! They suggested we go talk with American Airlines and see if they could help us out, since their plane was late.
We thought it was a long shot, but decided to try. After all, what else would we do in the Delhi Airport at midnight with no lodging and no contacts waiting for us? We finally found the American Airlines office (after 30 minutes and 10 flights of stairs with our baggage), explained our situation, and were asked to wait. An hour later we were told they were going to book us on another flight. Two hours later they told us the options they had for us, and three hours later we were booked on the same Jet Airways flight that would have cost us $800…for FREE! They also put us up in a hotel and paid for a taxi. WHAT A BLESSING! Crisis #5 averted!

Supporting Information – It was the most enjoyable business experience we’ve ever had. We only explained ourselves once, they brought us coffee, and we had great conversation with them. We even exchanged contact information with the main girl that helped us, and got invited to a Punjabi wedding close to where we live! In America we observed some really negative interactions between American airport workers and customers, and it just felt very redeeming to have such a positive experience in India…made the transition back to this crazy world a little easier. :)
It was a clean hotel with a complimentary breakfast, and they let us stay way past the noon check-out time until 7:30 PM, when we had to leave to catch out next flight. We hung at the airport for a couple of hours, then got on the plane! Hong Kong here we come…right?

Crisis #6 – We got on the plane, se settled in, and started watching a movie. Pretty soon that movie was done so we started watching another movie. And pretty soon, THAT movie was done. We were grounded for 4 hours because of fog! I think we were actually one of the only planes that even got off the ground…by some lucky coincidence, all the other airplanes unloaded their passengers, so by the time our pilot wanted to do the same, the entire airport was packed full and all hotels had been doled out to frustrated customers. So, we were stuck. I think our pilot felt the unrest and decided to just go for it. When your pilot says, “okay, we’re gonna go for it. Please pray that we’ll be able to get off the ground”, you tend to feel uneasy for a while! We eventually did get into the air though, and ended up getting to Hong Kong 5 hours later than expected. Jason, Christine and Josiah had gotten to the airport at our original time, so they were quite exhausted…it was SO good to see them, SO good to finally be where we wanted to be, and SO good to sleep! Crisis #6 OVER!

Supporting Information - When we got to Hong Kong Christine told us that we actually couldn’t get our Mainland China visas in Hong Kong anymore as that they had just changed the policy. We had planned to send it in when were in the U.S., but didn’t do it right away and then decided it might just be easier to do it there. SO, no mainland China for us! Totally okay, though…we’re going to SERIOUSLY explore Hong Kong and the islands around it, maybe look for a cheap ticket to a surrounding country that doesn’t require a visa, AND we know where we’ll be going for our next big trip!

In conclusion - We’re here, we’re safe, we’re happy, and we’re with people we love. Really, what more could you ask for. :)

Quick Update...

Well, our time in the "states" is coming to an end. :) I've spent the last couple of hours packing, Chris is finishing up some computer work, and tomorrow morning we crawl on a 16-hour flight to India, then make our way to HONG KONG to visit my cousins! We are SO excited, and are looking forward to some serious sight-seeing and quality time with Christine and her family.

This trip home has been a whirlwind, and once I finally get to sit down, I'll find a good 20 posts just from the last couple of weeks. But for now, I'm going to enjoy being here, spend time with my family, and thank God for His many blessings.

_________________________________________________________________

Sneak Peak: I'm going to do some editing of the family pictures we got taken over this break, but here's my favorite one. :) No editing needed!
