Miranda

When I was younger our family seemed to read entire "collections" - Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, Berenstein Bears, you name it! One of these groups of books was graciously provided by my grandma...an entire book collection authored by Grace Livingston Hill. These books were published somewhere between 1920 and 1940, and all revolve around a strong, down-on-her-luck Christian woman with a lovable personality and a heart of gold. When I think about it, these books could have been written about my grandma. I wouldn't doubt if they gave her strength when life was hard...I can imagine her reading these for 10 minutes before she went to bed - an indulgence that gave her strength for the next day.
In this book, Miranda is a spunky, misunderstood child who sees good in all the "bad" characters. She forms a bond with the naughty older school-boy, and is the only one he shows his true (kind, of course) nature to. To make a long story short, he is forced out of town, she becomes an old maid while waiting for him to return, and eventually they're reunited and move out west to create a life together. Loved every minute of it!
